Role of the centre
The Centre is meant to be a physical and virtual meeting place for talented students, young entrepreneurs, renowned business developers and innovative and leading companies.
It aims to boost innovation by providing an enabling, inspiring, and business-driven high-tech environment for these talented, ambitious and creative persons in the realm of new internet and broadband applications, high performance networks, service grids as well as of media business and gaming. These market sectors offer great opportunities to creativity and high quality initiatives.
The centre should be able to attract talents and creativity with its unique technical facilities, with attractive innovative projects and its professional support of highly motivated representatives from participating companies. Close involvement of large educational institutes, like the University of Groningen (RuG), the Hanze University, ensures the inflow of students/talents, the quality of the training programs and the institutional embedding of the center.
In the Northern Netherlands the broadband infrastructure is excellent. Large scale city and region fiber rings have been built according to the model for open access fiber networks. Through these initiatives the price of bandwidth has reached almost the same level as in the competitive Amsterdam area. Moreover, broadband connections of 100 Mbps and even 1 Gbps are available in all the major cities.
Besides the open fiber networks, the Northern Netherlands has also invested in world-class data centers, an ICT Center and a Media Centre. On the basis of this infrastructural foundation, attention is now shifting towards broadband services. The region aims to be leading in the development, deployment and provisioning of broadband services. The focus for the coming years will be on the development and implementation of new products and services. A major contribution is expected from the setup of a European Collaborative Innovation Centre for Broadband Media Services (E-CLIC). The plan for the E-CLIC has partly resulted from the BIRD project that is mainly concerned with broadband access. As argued above, the region is preparing strategically for the next phase in which broadband services are key. Transnational cooperation is indispensable as to share resources and markets for gaining economies of scale and greater impact.
