Key focus area of the centre: Development, deployment and provisioning of broadband services and content, including gaming in learning. Technical, media and business research and incubator.

Role of the centre

In the Rogaland area of Norway the broadband infrastructure is excellent. On a large scale both county and municipalities have a very high utilization coverage based on open access fiber networks. Broadband connections of more than 5 Gbps are available in all the major cities and municipality centres.

Besides the broadband infrastructure, the University of Stavanger and several companies in the area have invested in world-class data centers and media centres. This is much due to the region being the core region for the Norwegian petroleum Industry. On the basis of this infrastructural foundation the attention is now shifting to broadband services. The region aims, as the petroleum business is decreasing, to be among the leading regions in the development, deployment and provisioning of broadband services. The focus for the coming years will be on the development and implementation of new products and services.

The county together with the University and several industrial partners have in addition development plans and running development projects for food industry, tourism industry, culture industry, maritime industry, and renewable energy, to which the new broadband services are key tools.

The E-CLIC Centre is meant to be a physical and virtual meeting place for talented students, young entrepreneurs, renowned business developers and innovative and leading companies. It aims to boost innovation by providing an enabling, inspiring, and business-driven high-tech environment for these talented, ambitious and creative persons in the realm of new internet and broadband applications, high performance networks, service grids as well as of media business and gaming. These market sectors offer great opportunities to creativity and high quality initiatives.

The center should be able to attract talents and creativity with its unique technical facilities, with attractive innovative projects and its professional support of highly motivated representatives from participating companies. The Centre will be organized by University of Stavanger, as facilities in buildings, support, equipment and full studios and the students are available within the premises. Close involvement of iPark and RKK ensures the outflow of students/talents, and feedback to the quality of the training programs and the institutional embedding of the center.
